PARKINSON’S DISEASE

What Is Parkinsons disease?

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease which effects an estimated 1M patients in the US with only 500k receiving a formal diagnosis. There is no known cure or treatment to slow progression and the only FDA approved drugs are for managing disease symptoms, including cognitive impairment and tremors. PD is believed to be the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.

Patient Timeline

The average PD patient notices symptoms years before the official diagnosis occurs, greatly diminishing quality of life while the disease progresses to the point where symptom management drugs are prescribed. These drugs are only effective for a finite period of time so most movement disorder physicians postpone intervention until the symptoms reach peak severity. Both patients and physicians are anxious for a medical approach which might mitigate the onset of PD.

0-2 Years

Concern

Patient notices symptoms (tremor, cognition, shuffle, balance)

2 Years

Neurological Consult
  • Patient sees neurologist
  • Neurologist says they likely have PD but symptoms not progressed enough to prescribe medication
  • Only medication available is symptom management

2-8 Years

Disease Progression
  • Disease progresses until symptoms are severe
  • Neurologist prescribes symptom management medication

8-12 Years

Symtom Management
  • Symptoms are managed with medication, quality of life improves

12-15 Years

Medication Tolerance
  • Patient builds tolerance to medication and symptoms worsen

15 Years - End of life

Final Disease Progression
  • Symptoms continue to worsen
  • Invasive treatment including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Focused Ultrasound (FU) made available which marginally improve progressed symptoms
Growth Rate

The annual number of patients diagnosed with PD increased by 50% from 2022 to 2023 from 60k to 90k in the US alone. This increase is expected to continue as new diagnostic technology becomes available and people continue to age.
